Summer Music Series: Juma Sultan's Aboriginal Music Society

  • Athens Riverfront Park 4 North Water Street Athens, NY, 12015 United States (map)

The Athens Cultural Center is presenting a free summer music series taking place in Athens Riverfront Park and focusing on the diverse musical landscape of the greater Hudson Valley. The series will highlight local and regional artists, and collaborate with Hudson Valley community groups to provide artist Q & A and open sound checks to the youth of Ulster, Greene, and Columbia counties as an educational opportunity. This opportunity is free and open to all, parents please bring your kids if you think they would be interested!

The first act of the series is Juma Sultan's Aboriginal Music Society, an 8-piece afro-funk/garage jazz ensemble led by Juma Sultan, a percussionist and bassist who is a “link between free jazz and Jimi Hendrix.” (NY Times) Day 1 headliner at O+ Festival in Kingston last year, the band is incredible. They bring strong intellectual, historic, and musical credibility to open the series, and the show is just a darn good time for everyone.

Open Sound Check: 2-330pm

Youth Q & A: 330pm

Music: 5-7pm
