Art Explorations

On View May 2 - 18, 2025
First Friday Reception & Opening Friday, May 2, 5-7pm
Youth & Family Celebration, Wednesday, May 14, 4-6pm

Each year, the Athens Cultural Center teams up with the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District to celebrate the extraordinary artistic talents of our young people. This exhibition is about more than just displaying art; it’s a heartfelt celebration of creativity, resilience, and the power of self-expression. Working across mediums, each piece tells a unique story, sparking conversations and revealing the immense potential of our next generation.

ACC is thrilled to continue our collaboration with the district’s passionate art educators as curators of this show, and we are filled with gratitude for the love, care, and effort that they put into their work for our community. By welcoming students and families from across the region, we work to ensure that every child, regardless of their background or access to traditional art spaces, has the opportunity to shine.

When we invest in young artists, we invest in the future of our communities. By nurturing these creative voices, we are building a more inclusive, vibrant, and inspiring future—one masterpiece at a time.

Material Girl

On View June 6 - July 20, 2025
First Friday Reception & Opening Friday, June 6, 5-7pm
Open Saturdays & Sundays 12-5pm

Curated by Lisa Corinne Davis, Material Girl showcases a vibrant ensemble of multigenerational self-identifying women artists, each hailing from diverse backgrounds and united by their fascination with the physicality of paint. Rather than merely applying color, they engage in dynamic techniques —puncturing, weaving, incising, and dragging the paint across the canvas—expanding the scope of painting. This active involvement transforms the artwork into an immersive visual experience that invites viewers to observe, and move throughout the compelling surfaces, uncovering the unique expressions of each artist. At the heart of this exhibition lies an emphasis on the physical presence and sensory experience of paint, while giving voice to historically powerful female perspectives and demonstrating the keen and much needed intergenerational dialogues between artists.

Goddess:
Origins of Wonder

On View August 1 - September 14, 2025
First Friday Reception & Opening Friday, August 1, 5-7pm

Curated by Niva Dorell, GODDESS: Origins of Wonder explores creation in its most sacred form—the act of bringing something new into existence, whether it be life, art, or transformation. In this exhibition, the word “goddess” means not a mythical figure but a living presence—a maker of worlds, a bearer of vision, a powerful deity guardian that shapes, dreams, and manifests.

Through a diverse collection of works, Origins of Wonder honors the unseen labor of making, the intuitive force behind inspiration, and the divine connection between creator and creation. Collectively, it aims to be a tribute to the origins of all things: the wonder born from the divine femme that resides in all of us, an energy to be honored, revered, and treated with ultimate respect.
