ACC hosted our inaugural outdoor film series from May through September, 2022. Most screenings took place under the stars at Athens's historic Riverfront Park, right on the Hudson River, with special guests, performances and events in partnership with The Stewart House Hotel.

This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature and administered in Columbia County by the Greene County Council on the Arts dba CREATE Council for the Arts.

A recent college grad finds herself in snowy upstate New York, caring for her reclusive great aunt. The old woman's hidden, romantic past resurfaces and bolsters both of their spirits.

Directed by local filmmaker and writer, Katie Cokinos and set in upstate NY, I Dream Too Much is a heartwarming tale illustrating the challenges that women and families experience from the perspective of three different generations performed by Eden Brolin, Diane Ladd, Danielle Brooks, and Christina Rouner.

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion.

Sing and dance along to this incredible live performance footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.

Joseph Patel is an Academy Award-winning Producer, Director and Writer on documentaries and short films. He recently produced the documentary feature, Summer Of Soul (...Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised), directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, which won the 2021 Oscar for Best Documentary. The film also won multiple other awards (BAFTA, Independent Spirit, PGA, Critics Choice, Sundance Grand Jury & Audience Award) and was declared “The Best Film of 2021” by The New York Times. Patel began his career as a music & culture journalist, writing for magazines and websites. He went on to produce and direct television and digital content for MTV News & Docs and Vice Media, and served as Content and Creative Director at The FADER and Vevo.

FILM: July 9, A Trip To The Moon

Hosted by Denny Daniel with 16mm projection

Featuring a Live Score by Jef Brown

at the Athens Cultural Center, 24 Second Street

There will be two screenings of this short film, 2pm and 3:30pm.

Meet special guest Denny Daniel of The Museum of Interesting Things to learn film history tidbits alongside a display of zoetropes, kinetoscopes, camera obscuras and other artifacts.

Daniel will project Georges Méliès’ A Trip to The Moon on 16mm projector. Méliès was known for the use of special effects, popularizing such techniques as substitution splices, multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted colour. He was also one of the first filmmakers to use storyboards. A Trip to the Moon (1902) involves a strange, surreal journey in the style of Jules Verne, and is considered among the most important early science fiction films.

Jef Brown is a multi instrumentalist, composer and producer who plays guitar, bass and saxophone. He has played an integral role in the bands Gospel of Mars, Evolutionary Jass Band and JOMF. Originally from Columbia, Maryland, he’s lived in Baltimore, Portland Oregon, Los Angeles, Brooklyn New York. His list of credits as a musician includes Parquet Courts, Kyp Malone (Rain Machine), Fergus and Geronimo, David Sitek (Maximum Balloon) and he has composed for dance companies MGM Grand and Dark Porch Productions. In 2006 he released his first solo album “Change has got to Come” on Community Library. In 2007 he started his own label, Jaffe Records and released his second LP of solo improvised saxophone and guitar works “Dreams.”

He currently resides in Kingston NY where he teaches guitar and is working on his third solo LP, a collection of compositions for classical guitar.

Bullied girly-boy Scott Townsend grows into revered drag queen Thirsty Burlington. Fighting obstacles along the way, what he really wants is self-acceptance. Thirsty is a true life, musical adventure as dramatic as it is entertaining, based on the coming-of-age experiences of one of the best Cher impersonators out there.

It's a celebration of Pride Month and visitors are encouraged to start at The Athens Cultural Center's gallery show, Spectrum, an exhibit of Hudson Valley-based LGBTQ+ artists.
